A small back track again! White River, Ont.

Yesterday on our way to Sault Ste Marie,  we stopped at White River, the birthplace of the real life bear cub....Winnie The Poo !

On August 24, 1914  Lt. Harry Colebourn (an army veterinarian) bought the orphaned bear cub from a trapper, on the steam train platform for $20.

Lt. Harry cared for the black bear and named her Winnie.  He took Winnie all the way to England, as he was serving in the war. She was very tame but he eventually  needed to leave her in the London zoo.  There she delighted people for over 20 years, including a little boy named Christopher Robin Milne.   He added the name Poo to the bear and Christopher's father, A.A. Milne was the famous author who wrote the beloved story.  It would be many many years before Disney bought the rights and colored Poo bear a golden honey.  And as they say "the rest is history"....cool, we drove through the little Ontario town where Poo bear was born !!
